Our History
Our convention center opened in 2002 on a 26-acre site, with nearly 100,000 square feet of event space that emphasizes clean, modern, and expansive design.
Accentuated with stunning original artwork and equipped with top-of-the-line audiovisual facilities, the Overland Park Convention Center quickly became the go-to hub for event venues near Kansas City, having held countless events and audiences within its space. Meals, receptions, and service timing are managed in-house under Executive Chef David Ruiz, whose award-winning work has raised expectations for convention center dining in Kansas City and beyond. In his first full year in Kansas City, Chef David Ruiz earned industry and local recognition, including Meetings Today Magazine Trendsetter of the Year honors and additional culinary accolades that reinforced OPCC’s food and beverage program as a real differentiator. His approach blends innovation, sustainable sourcing, and practical execution for events that need meals to arrive hot, delicious, and on time.
We also offer tastings for planners who want to make confident decisions before the event. It’s the part of our process that adds a more personalized planning layer and helps menus hold up once guest counts rise and timelines tighten.
Guests will also notice newer touches across the venue itself. CURA, OPCC’s reimagined café concept, brings Chef David Ruiz’s culinary vision into the daily guest experience through fresh, seasonal ingredients and a more elevated approach to coffee, snacks, and quick breaks. That update sits alongside broader operational investments, including sustainability efforts and continued improvements to connectivity and digital infrastructure.
