When you’re planning an event, you turn to the experts–and at the Overland Park Convention Center, our team is here to help you every step of the way.
But we do more than just offer advice. Our staff work proactively to make OPCC a more welcoming space for guests with all abilities.
If you’re concerned about how your event venue supports guests with disabilities, rest assured: our team has received specialized training to ensure all guests feel safe, respected, and supported from arrival to exit.
Read on to learn how our team prioritizes ADA and inclusivity to make OPCC a more inclusive space.
Top-Notch Training
To help our team members understand how to work with guests who have sensory sensitivities, we reached out to KultureCity to provide personalized training. KultureCity is a nonprofit that educates venues like ours about how to accommodate “invisible” disabilities.
These disabilities can include PTSD, autism, and dementia—any disorder that may cause someone to feel uncomfortable around loud noises and large groups of people.
Not only did KultureCity teach us how to respond to guests with sensory disorders, but they also recommended some resources we could offer these guests. By including signage and offering sensory bags—which include tools like sound-reducing headphones and cue cards—we can make guests feel more comfortable.
The Right Space
Our event venue also provides spaces to help guests feel comfortable during their event. If a guest with a sensory sensitivity becomes overwhelmed, they simply need to contact a member of our team to access our sensory room.
This quiet, low-light space offers the perfect haven for any guest feeling overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of a large event. But our space doesn’t just accommodate sensory sensitivities.
Team members can also direct guests with physical disabilities to ADA-compliant ramps and elevators, because regardless of how someone gets around, they should be able to move through the event space with ease.
