You want to keep your guests safe. We got into this business because we want to help people schedule a perfect event. And when someone feels safe at your venue, they will be much more likely to schedule an event with your team again.
At the Overland Park Convention Center, safety and security take top priority for events we host. If you’re interested in overhauling your security, then we want to help.
We can offer our tips for boosting your security protocols, so anyone who works with your team can focus on the most important thing—hosting their event.
Tip #1: Work with the experts.
Don’t rely on your own security knowledge. It’s important to get advice from the experts. Their experience allows them to make suggestions and highlight mistakes you may not have considered.
We work with Prevent Advisors, a team that specializes in risk mitigation and venue security assessments. When we met with them in 2023, they provided an in-depth walkthrough of our facilities, pointing out potential gaps in our security measures.
They had a number of valuable suggestions, like boosting our security presence in high-risk areas, like the loading dock, and lowering traffic during non-event hours. This was an invaluable experience, and they provide regular quarterly check-ins to help us maintain our high standards of security.
Tip #2: Run drills.
Drills are an important part of any security plan. Every month, we host training sessions to better prepare our teams for emergency situations.
Without training, an emergency could cause even the most level-headed person to freeze or panic. But our monthly training sessions allow our team members to understand the best response to threats like fires, tornadoes, or intruders.
Tip #3: Don’t ignore your cybersecurity.
Event center security doesn’t end at hiring security guards and locking the entrances at night. You need to prepare for cybersecurity breaches as well. In the modern age, your online domain is always under attack.
If you conduct business online, then you owe it to your clients to keep their information secure. We work with the Department of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) for expert cybersecurity recommendations.
CISA offers weekly online security scans through their Cyber Hygiene (CyHy) program, so we always know that our online presence is safe for our clients.
Tip #4: Maintain a dialogue with law enforcement.
Don’t be afraid to reach out to your local law enforcement for security assistance. For high-profile VIP events, we work with the Overland Park Police Department, and occasionally, federal agencies like the FBI.
We take responsibility for the safety of our guests, and with local and federal agencies monitoring our events for security risks, nothing will take us by surprise.
